Camping, Hunting and Food Dehydrating

Does your family enjoy camping or hunting? If you don't have a food dehydrator, you should get one as soon as you finish reading this page. The benefits of a food dehydrator when being an avid outdoorsman are many, including even making survival food that can save your life in an emergency. After all, you probably aren't expecting the worst to happen, but being prepared can be the difference between life and death. Making sure you have edible food for much needed calories is important in a survival situation and this food can sustain you until help arrives.
Before we get into some great survival foods you can make in a dehydrator, let's talk about some delicious snacks that are great to take camping or hunting with you. It also bears mentioning that a Nesco system with Nesco dehydrating trays is one of the best on the market. Since dehydrated food doesn't need refrigeration, it is ideal for outdoor situations. One healthy snack you can make that your whole family will love is homemade trail mix. There is no set recipe since part of the fun of homemade trail mix is choosing what goes into it. With a faithful dehydrator you should dehydrate some fresh fruits. Any kind of fruit you like from apples and bananas to apricots and pears can be dehydrated in your dehydrator. Nesco dehydrating trays can be filled with all kinds of fruits. Cut the fruits into pieces and mix with some healthy unsalted nuts like almonds.
If you are looking for a meal idea instead of a snack you can make in your food dehydrator, try soup. Yes, it is very possible to make soup in your dehydrator...a soup mix at least! In the dehydrator, follow the instructions for dehydrating cooked chicken, beef or fish. Nesco dehydrator trays can again be used for this. Dehydrate vegetables like carrots, onions, garlic, peppers, celery or potatoes. Dehydrate your own herbs if you wish like basil, thyme, or parsley. Nesco dehydrating trays with small holes work great for this. Put all of these things, whatever you choose, in a freezer bag with a cube of bouillon of your choice. When you are at your camp site, open the bag and simply reconstitute the ingredients by mixing with water over a fire. You should also add rice or noodles for a more filling meal or to stretch it out to be several. Not only is this tasty and healthy, but you can save a tons of space in your pack. A freezer bag takes up almost no room and gives minimal added weight. Nesco dehydrating trays will make this very easy.
For a survival food packet, which can be the difference between life and death, use your food dehydrator to make jerky. Protein is going to be the most important food when in a survival situation. Make sure you have enough to last for days and adding vegetables like carrots, peppers and potatoes can also help you survive. Though not ideal, as long as you have a source of water, you could survive for weeks on jerky if you needed to. In survival situations calories mean life and the more calories you have, the longer you last. Calories, after all, are the fuel for our bodies.
