Something about leaving the city seems to trigger a response within the soul that causes us to lose our fears and embrace the unfamiliar.

Best of all, lodges are appealing to those who would not even consider themselves sportspersons. If you choose to try your hand at a fishing rod or at firing a gun, there is no better place to do it. But for some, the lodge will remain purely a place to sit down, relax, and finish the book that you have been trying to read for months, away from the distractions of everyday life.

Why Would You Teach Your Children to Hunt

Many times I am asked why I hunt and I am sure most of you have been asked the same thing. Most non-hunters believe it is the kill that is so exhilarating, but for those of you who share in my passion, you realize it is the thrill of the hunt that makes what we do so satisfying. 

Hunting is now a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. In today's society, most of us do not have to hunt in order to survive. We can go down to the supermarket and buy the meat that has already been processed for us. These animals are raised on farms specifically for the purpose of supplying our society with the different meats that we consume. 

Many people never think of these products actually coming from a live animal. By the time the animal is processed and the meat packaged up, the idea of someone actually having to kill that animal to supply our needs has dissipated. I do not understand this logic, but I have heard it too many times from others who believe it to be so. There is not any appreciation for the life of the animal we are consuming when you just order your meat from a drive thru window or pick it up in the supermarket.

Every time I serve an animal that I have actually hunted and taken on my own, I think about how what I am about to eat actually got there. I think about the hours I spent scouting and setting up stands. I think about the food plots I put out. I think about the clothing and little gadgets I have bought through the years to give me a better edge on staying concealed. I think about how the actual hunt went and what was going on around me that day. I think about how many hours I had spent hunting and waiting for that specific moment. 

All of these things are important to us as hunters and I want to share this with my children so they may understand what death is, how it is a part of life, and how fragile life really is. I want them to understand that is not right to just kill something for the fun of it.

I want them to realize that these animals were placed on this Earth for us to take care of. If we do not do our part of controlling the population of animals, they become over populated and end up dying of starvation instead of at the hands of a hunter. If we do not do our part in conservation, these animals will not survive either. 

We have many responsibilities as caretakers of this Earth and hunting is part of our responsibility. That is one reason I want to teach my children to hunt. There are fewer of us now than ever before that hunt. It seems as though the busy lifestyles we lead and the cost of hunting land is driving more and more people away from this honored tradition. Some people have come up with ways to help with these problems that keep us away from hunting. Most states have now started allowing game ranches to be set up.

At first, I was totally against this idea, but then I actually visited one. I have always had private land I could hunt on. I would have to pay to lease it, and then I would spend money on fuel, fertilizer, seeds, and minerals. I would then spend hours working on stands, putting in food plots, clearing shooting lanes, and so on. Now, this is something I really enjoyed doing, but as I got older and my three daughters started getting involved in more activities, I realized I just did not have the time to put into the land or into actually hunting. 

I did not want to give up hunting, but after several unsuccessful years, I knew I had to try something different. It was then that I visited a game ranch. I thought this would be like shooting fish in a barrel or just not very challenging of a hunt. Boy was I wrong!! The difference between where I hunted before & hunting on the game ranch was that they had done a better job at managing their herd,they had beautiful food plots, extremely comfortable stands, their lodging was much more comfortable than my camper, and meals were superb.

Time was something that I did not have a lot of, and it greatly impacted my success in hunting. At the ranch, they had put all the time and work into it for me, so all I had to do was come hunting. It was a very challenging hunt, and much more difficult than I thought it would be. Since then, I have been back many times. I have not always been successful in taking an animal, but I come for the hunting and the time I get to share with my children. 

To all of you who keep making excuses about having nowhere to hunt or that you just do not have time, well you can't use that anymore. There are hundreds of hunting ranches across the U.S. and are quite affordable when you compare what the costs are to maintain a piece of property for just one season.
